Getting married in Auckland is always such a beautiful vibe! Known for its vibrant and diverse landscapes, you have not only cool city venues to choose from but also gorgeous coastal views to enjoy — I am always so inspired by the romance and love I see in New Zealand’s biggest city!
Plus, you also have lush vineyards and serene countryside vistas just nearby, offering so many laid-back and romantic wedding locations in Auckland and the surrounding area. Paired with incredible local cuisine, a temperate climate, and plenty of talented local vendors, it’s so easy to plan a gorgeous celebration here, true to your style and personality.
To help you get started, here’s my ultimate Auckland wedding guide! As a local to the city, these are my insider tips on everything from the best venues, the legalities, setting your budget, and so much more!
The Best Time Of Year To Plan A Wedding In Auckland
Let’s start with the time of year, as selecting the right season is so key to match your wedding style and preferred imagery. Being in Auckland, we are so lucky in that we enjoy a mild climate and you can plan an outdoor ceremony just about year-round!
While summer is definitely the most popular time to get married, my personal favourite season is autumn! It can be less busy, but it’s also one of the top times of year for natural wedding photography in Auckland.
In autumn months like April and May, the sun sets earlier in the year, which means we can easily take all of your portraits in golden hour. Golden hour is that soft, warm light just before sunset, ideal for taking candid photographs and portraiture. You’ll also benefit from gentler temperatures than summer, and beautiful vibrant colours, all of which add so much emotion to your final photos.
Another consideration is that Auckland’s weather can be unpredictable, with rain always a risk. The winter months usually receive the most rainfall, but don’t stress about the weather!
Rain can actually be amazing in photos and I have plenty of tips to help in case of rain on your wedding day. I’ll also be by your side to answer any questions and can suggest posing guidance that works well on cloudy days!
What Are The Steps To Getting Married In Auckland?
I totally get that wedding planning can be stressful, but I’ll be here to help you every step of the way! It becomes less overwhelming if you break the process down, so here’s how to plan a wedding in Auckland, step by step.
1. Understand the legalities of getting married in New Zealand
Choosing between a legal or symbolic wedding is completely personal — and both are totally valid options! If you do want your wedding to be legally binding, you’ll need to plan ahead.
You’ll need to obtain a marriage licence in Auckland from the Births, Deaths and Marriages Department, at the cost of $150 NZD. You’ll also need to select a venue, arrange a celebrant, and plan on two witnesses who’ll be present at the ceremony. However, there are many amazing Auckland wedding celebrants, whether you prefer a spiritual or free-spirited ceremony, or anything in between!
After the ceremony, your celebrant will give you a document, known as the particulars of marriage, which you’ll use to register your marriage with the government.

2. Plan out your guest list
This task can be a little overwhelming, but the earlier you start deciding on your guest list, the less stressful it’ll be! Consider if you want to elope, host an intimate celebration, or arrange a larger, traditional wedding, then start writing down your guest list accordingly.
You can find reception venues in Auckland to suit any size of event, so it really comes down to what matters most to you as a couple, along with your budget.
Who means the most to you, and you can’t imagine getting married without them? These names should always be first on your list. There’s no right or wrong way to approach this, so think about friends, family, and other close relationships when deciding who to invite.
Most wedding venues will charge a per person cost for catering (and open bar), so keep in mind that larger weddings are inevitably going to require a much larger budget.
3. Set your wedding budget
It’s also key to plan out your wedding budget as early on as you can. Again, like making your guest list, this can be a challenge, but really try to be honest and realistic with your priorities, so you can budget accordingly.
It can help to research average vendor costs in your area as well, so you can accurately allocate funds. However, keep in mind that your celebrations will be absolutely perfect, no matter what you do, and you can do much with smaller budgets as well!
It can help to create a spreadsheet, with categories for major expenses like your venue, honeymoon, florals, etc. This can serve as a visual aid so you can see how much money is being spent where.
4. Select your venue (and vendors)
Now, time to lock in your vendors! This part is so fun, but don’t delay — popular venues can book out well in advance, so if you find a space you love, put down a deposit as soon as you can.
While selecting a wedding venue, think about factors like whether you want to be inside or outdoors, your budget, and also the theme that you have in mind. Some venues are inherently better suited for certain styles, so think about your decor plans when you’re on your venue walk-throughs.
On smaller budgets, you can easily transform a simple space into something so romantic with a few flowers, fairy lights, or table centrepieces, so don’t be afraid to get creative and think outside the box!
Once you have your dream venue, confirm other time-sensitive vendors. You may want to start with hiring a wedding planner in Auckland, as they can often recommend other local suppliers they know and trust, plus their guidance can be a massive stress relief!
Then, lock in other key vendors, starting with your Auckland wedding photographer and florist before moving on to celebrants, hair and makeup, and your cake, to name a few. Many vendors are small businesses run by just one person, or a small team, so their capacity to take on weddings may be limited — which is why I encourage you to plan ahead!

These spaces are drenched in natural light, so romantic, and unique in their own way, making them ideal if you’re seeking a meaningful and low-key venue.
- Whispering Waters: Located in Kumeu, this stunning space is off-the-grid and ideal for bohemian eco-weddings. Offering natural gardens and a stylish Events Shed, with vaulted ceilings, it’s so easy to plan a fun celebration here!
- Bridgewater Country Estate: Surrounded by native landscapes, this gorgeous space in Kaukapakapa is ideal for intimate weddings, offering special packages for celebrations with ten or fewer guests. I love that you can say your vows in lush forestation, so serene and romantic!
- The Stables: This wedding venue, in Matakana, offers some of the best vistas for landscape portraits! We can shoot your amazing images, framed by New Zealand’s gorgeous rolling hills and lakes. There’s a gorgeous garden space for your ceremony, or say your vows just next door at St. Andrews Church.
- The Hunting Lodge: Known for their incredible wine, the Hunting Lodge, in Waimauku, always delivers such gorgeous weddings. Their striking, purpose-built barn is easy to customise to your theme, and there’s a cute retro caravan on site that can serve drinks before your reception!
- Bracu Estate: Located in Bombay, this stylish venue is known for its seasonal cuisine, so it’s my top recommendation for foodies. There are also lots of stunning ceremony locations here that photograph beautifully, including the Olive Grove and Garden Gazebo.
All of these venues are very popular, particularly for summer weddings. If you’re eyeing up a weekend date in January or February, for example, lock in your space as soon as you’re able. That being said, if you’re flexible and would consider a weekday wedding, you can sometimes benefit from reduced rental rates and increased availability.
