5 Romantic Kumeu Wedding Venues For A Relaxed Vineyard Celebration

With boutique wineries, lots of history, and relaxed country charm, Kumeu is a beautiful choice for your wedding! Kumeu is approximately a 30-minute drive northwest of Auckland but feels so removed from the city, making it an ideal choice for couples planning a laid-back vineyard celebration. You’ll find such warm and welcoming Kumeu wedding venues here that you and your guests will love!

While this region is home to Auckland’s oldest winery, you can also find charming historic architecture, breathtaking county scenery, and incredible local produce and cuisine, all of which add such a special element to your celebrations. If you’re looking for a romantic, rustic, and beautiful location, Kumeu can do it all, from intimate, boutique wineries to spacious estates that are perfect for larger, traditional weddings.

If you’re seeking inspiration, here are some of the best Kumeu wineries for relaxed wedding celebrations. Each one offers stunning views, impeccable food and wine, and romantic spaces for your ceremony and reception.

1. Markovina Vineyard Estate, @markovina_vineyard_estate

Markovina is easily one of the most romantic vineyard wedding venues in Kumeu! This all-in-one space is family owned and has nine amazing ceremony locations. However, they only host one wedding per day, giving couples exclusivity and privacy to relax and celebrate.

The Chestnut Tree, The Palms, and The Cherry Blossom Round are just a few of the outdoor ceremony spots available to you, each with lush greenery, beautiful sunlight, and native gardens. I also particularly love the Barrel Waterfall space, which delivers tropical garden vibes, lush and full of palms, oaks, and plant life. Plus, it offers plenty of natural shade on warm summer afternoons, which is a massive advantage!

Or, for an indoor ceremony, The Stone Fireplace is a bright and airy space, adorned in white and featuring an oversized fireplace. It’s so gorgeous in winter, with a warm fire burning, and can also be transformed into your reception space. With space for hosting up to 300 seated guests, this vineyard is a popular option for larger Auckland weddings.

The staff here are always so friendly and the cuisine is delicious, particularly their buffets. Plus, with decades of experience, their packages include everything you need to make the process of planning your Markovina Vineyard Estate wedding stress-free.

As your Auckland wedding photographer, I know this venue well and will ensure we make the most of the gorgeous golden afternoon light here. Your Markovina wedding photos will be so natural and bright, with lots of outdoor areas we can utilise including meadows and vibrant gardens.

2. The Hunting Lodge, @the_hunting_lodge

For a Kumeu winery wedding venue with personality and style, The Hunting Lodge is always such a wonderful option. The grounds here are so stunning, and the sunsets even better! This versatile wedding space can host up to 168 guests for a seated reception or up to 250 for a cocktail-style celebration.

There’s so much to love about a Hunting Lodge wedding — not only do they make their own wine, but they also have a restored 1975 vintage caravan, turned into a bar, for guests. It adds a relaxed vibe and is also a fun and retro element to add to your wedding photography!

For your romantic ceremony, there are several locations available, such as right on the edge of the vineyards, backed by rolling hills of grapes, or next to the Barn, the venue’s featured structure that also hosts receptions.

With oversized timber doors, exposed concrete, and a neutral colour palette, the Barn is such a stunning space that brings in lots of natural light and photographs so well in both summer and winter. The interior is also a blank canvas, the ideal starting point to bring your wedding vision to life! There are also outdoor lounge areas where you and your guests can relax, so nice on a summer’s day.

Hunting Lodge wedding photography is always striking, with the clean minimalist design of the Barn creating a beautiful contrast with the organic gardens and palms throughout the property.

3. Abel Estate (formerly Gracehill), @abelestatevenue

I have a special place in my heart for Abel Estate, as I actually got married here! Weddings at Gracehill Vineyard Estate in Kumeu, as the venue used to be known before an ownership change, always delight with their beautiful grounds and serene, romantic spaces for your ceremony and reception.

As wedding planning experts, Abel Estate is a good choice for intimate vineyard wedding locations in Kumeu, with a special package for smaller weddings of under 60 guests, making it so easy to plan your celebrations. They can host a maximum of 100 guests.

Abel Estate can manage your catering, styling (including flowers), and even offer fun extras like outdoor games and a digital photo booth for your reception.

This venue also caters to cultural weddings very well, working with expert planners from various communities and offering a variety of different cuisines.

There’s a stunning white rotunda, beautifully positioned in a lush garden, which makes for a popular outdoor ceremony location. Or, say your vows in the contemporary marquee, draped in white linen and adorned in florals, for an indoor ceremony with abundant natural light.

Couples love this venue as it is timelessly beautiful, with inspiring natural scenery and bright interior spaces that can be easily customised with floral arrangements and decor.

Wedding photography at Abel Estate is always romantic and bright, as this venue provides so many gorgeous outdoor areas where we can shoot. If you love the idea of timeless garden images, especially in spring and summer, then you’ll love the venue’s jetty, vineyards, and a beautiful footbridge over a bubbling brook.

4. Soljans Estate Winery, @soljansestatewines

A family-owned vineyard going back five generations, Soljans Estate Winery is one of the top Kumeu wedding reception venues for heritage and relaxation. This space is classically beautiful, designed to honour the family’s Croatian heritage, and your wedding will include their award-winning cuisine and wine.

You can say your vows in a stylish interior space, or outdoors on the lawn or vineyards, each offering relaxing and romantic views. With white folding chairs and your choice of florals, your Soljans Estate Winery wedding will feel so timeless and welcoming, like a European fairy tale brought to life.

For your reception, the stylish Heritage Room can seat up to 60 guests, or combine it with the connecting Legacy Room to seat up to 100, with a lovely indoor-outdoor flow to bring in plenty of fresh air and natural light. Or, for smaller weddings, Soljans offer packages from Mondays to Thursdays for 50 guests and up (weekends require a minimum of 70 guests).

You’ll love the golden afternoon light here, and we can wander into the rolling hills of grapes to take such stunning couples’ portraits, softly lit and romantic. However, there are lots of great photo opportunities here, including the gorgeous stone facade of the main building, framed by soaring palms, soft manicured lawns, and a purpose-built Mediterranean-style pagoda.

With decades of experience, you’ll be assigned a personal wedding planner who’ll be with you every step of the way and can recommend preferred vendors and suppliers who can perfectly bring your vision to life!

5. Kumeu Valley Estate, @kumeauvalleyestate

Ok, so this venue technically isn’t a vineyard, but I’m including Kumeu Valley Estate as this space really has it all! This unique venue has so much rustic charm, with couples having exclusive access on the day of their wedding. There’s space here to host up to 250 guests.

Its focal point is a gorgeous stone and timber barn-like building, with a bell tower — but it’s just as beautiful inside, with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and lots of sunlight streaming in through its oversized windows.

This family-owned venue prides itself on flexibility and always creates special, bespoke weddings for the couples they work with. In spring, you can say your vows under the cherry blossoms, their gorgeous pink hues adding such a pop of bright colour to your photos! Or, the whimsical forest area is also a great ceremony space, lined with soaring tall trees! You can even plan a twilight ceremony here, the trees twinkling with softly draped fairy lights.

In winter, the rustic fireplace space is a winner; an inviting rustic barn space that can be lit with candles for an indoor ceremony. For your reception, choose from a range of different menus, with delicious vegetarian and multicultural options.

I always love photographing Kumeu Valley Estate weddings, as we have such a wide range of locations where we can shoot! From romantic forest images to a tranquil bridal suite for your getting-ready photos, you’ll love the idyllic and natural images we can create here!
