The Top 5 Engagement Shoot Locations in Auckland
Engagement is such a beautiful time in life! If you’ve just gotten engaged, congrats! Savour the love and emotion with a photoshoot that you can enjoy together, use for your save-the-dates, or send to family — and luckily, there are so many engagement shoot locations in Auckland!
Our beautiful city is one of diverse landscapes, so you don’t need to travel far to find a romantic and special location for your shoot. From vibrant urban backdrops to lush forests and beaches, I encourage you to be intentional with selecting where to take engagement photos in Auckland. By taking your photos in a location you love, your images will have so much more meaning and will feel authentic to who you are as a couple!
Outdoor locations are often the best choice for engagement photos as we can maximise natural light. As a local, I’m always happy to suggest locations, but to help you get started, here are some of the most photogenic, unique, and romantic spots for engagement shoots in Auckland.
1. Muriwai
One of my favourite places for outdoor engagement photography in Auckland
If you’re unsure where to shoot, engagement photos at Muriwai are always a winner! This coastal community, on the West Coast, is just a short drive from Auckland and offers so much diversity for photography. Featuring stunning beauty, this location is ideal for creating romantic outdoor portraits, packed with emotion. Plus, there are lots of boardwalks here, offering easy access to the views.
Muriwai is perhaps best known for its rugged, black-sand beach, which creates such a unique backdrop for your romantic images. Stroll hand in hand, taking in the windswept coastline and dramatic rock formations, while I capture your love from behind the lens. It’s a wild and rugged coastline, with lots of epic cliff formations, ideal for couples who love nature and being outside.
Muriwai Maori Bay is also home to a famous gannet colony, which come here to nest between August and March each year. You can see the birds and their nests from a purpose-built boardwalk, so you could incorporate this into your shoot too!
And sharing a border with Muriwai is Woodhill Forest, with towering pines and epic views — here you’ll find lots of walking trails but also fun activities like horseback riding. This means we could create such an array of images, including forest, dunes, and coastal settings, all while you share a romantic day together in one of Auckland’s most scenic regions!

2. Bethells Beach
Another gorgeous choice is Bethells Beach, one of the best Auckland engagement shoot locations with ocean views. It’s also found along the West Coast and is a spectacular black-sand surf beach with lots of coastal hiking trails and panoramic views. This stretch of coastline is so gorgeous that it’s actually been featured in several movies!
For your Bethells Beach engagement photos, we could also visit the picturesque dunes found here, which are gorgeous and would add such a dramatic sense of scale to your images. Just past the sand dunes is Lake Wainamu, another beautiful spot surrounded by native bushland.
Or, let’s check out the sea cave at Bethells, which is usually dry if we’re there at low tide. This wide cave creates a natural frame to the beach and landscape in the background and is full of natural light, so this can be such a fun location to include in your photo shoot.
During busier periods, there’s also a cute food truck, perfect if you’d like to grab a coffee or snack before your beach stroll.
Bethells Beach is particularly stunning at golden hour, framed by the soft pastel hues of sunset. As this beach is quite popular in summer, sunset (or sunrise) can be a good option for avoiding the crowds and ensuring there aren’t others in the background of your pictures. As a local Auckland wedding photographer, I know our beaches and parks well and would be so happy to help you plan the perfect day at Bethells!

3. Piha Beach
More West Coast goodness can be found at Piha Beach! Offering those quintessential black-sand views, rugged cliffs, and lots of bushwalking trails through native forests, it’s easy to spend all day enjoying this beautiful part of the world, and Piha is always so photogenic.
Piha Beach is also home to the famous Lion Rock, one of the region’s most iconic landmarks and the remnants of an ancient volcano. If you’re local to Auckland, including Lion Rock in the background would add such a meaningful sense of place to your engagement photos.
Another great thing about Piha is that it’s home to a waterfall! It’s rare to find both beach and waterfall views in one location, so if you’re up for it, we can do the short hike to Kitekite Falls. You’ll pass by precious kauri trees before coming across a gorgeous waterfall that cascades down into turquoise waters below.
It’s an absolutely stunning waterfall and well worth the trek, as your engagement photography here will feel so special and romantic.
For scenic engagement photo ideas in Auckland, you could bring along some cheese or wine and enjoy a romantic afternoon at Piha while I capture candid, romantic snaps! We can try and time it to avoid the bulk of the crowds, or just embrace the chaos — we can still create vibrant and fun engagement photos, even if the beach is busy.
Of course, being west-facing, Piha Beach is beautiful to visit during sunset too! If you want to stay the night, there are also lots of cute Airbnbs and cottages nearby.

4. Auckland Domain
If you’d prefer the convenience of taking photos in the city, the Domain is one of my top Auckland engagement shoot locations. Auckland Domain is such a serene botanical garden, with grand trees, peaceful gardens, and streams — the city’s oldest and largest park is ideal for your engagement photos!
For your Auckland Domain engagement photos, we can make use of all the gorgeous gardens for an outdoor shoot, featuring the grand Auckland Museum as an architectural backdrop. Or, if you want to browse the museum, that would also be an opportunity to create some unique images.
With lush green lawns and the city skyline in the distance, the Domain is a really versatile space, no matter what time of day we visit. You could pack a picnic, bring along a frisbee, or simply relax and people watch — think of the photo shoot as a casual date opportunity, with the added bonus of professional photographs!
As an alternative, or if it happens to be raining, we can explore the Domain Wintergardens, essentially a glasshouse all undercover, so great for rainy days. This stunning Victorian-style glasshouse dates back to the early 1900s and is home to many colourful blooms and tropical plants. Admission is free, so it’s well worth a visit as we can create such romantic and unique images here!
If you’re planning to get married in Auckland, both the Auckland Museum and the Wintergardens host weddings as well, with unique spaces that you and your guests will love.

5. Long Bay Regional Park
Only 20 minutes from Auckland, Long Bay Regional Park offers lush greenery overlooking the beach. This East Coast park is ideal for a casual waterfront photoshoot and offers varied scenery and locations where we can take photos. It’s usually not too crowded, so it feels like a hidden gem just outside the CBD.
The beach is over a kilometre in length, and the park features large grassy meadows, tall trees, and soft rolling hills. Plus, if you feel like a walk, there are several trails here that meander through native forest and offer serene, relaxing views. We can also incorporate some history into your photo shoot, as the original homestead built here still stands.
An engagement photo shoot at Long Bay Regional Park would be ideal for couples who love the outdoors and seek a relaxed, easygoing place where they can spend the day while I take photos. You could plan a short hike, go for a swim, or even bring along a kite to fly at the long, sandy beach — simply enjoy one another’s company, soak up the sunshine, or just relax.
The beach here is such a sparkling blue hue, especially on a sunny day, so this park is also a great choice for those timeless beach images — kick off your shoes, wade through the water, and share a kiss as you admire the stunning ocean views. Once you forget I’m there, the photography magic will really kick in! Of course, I’ll always be there with guidance if you’re worried about being in front of the camera.
